The Opera: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The theme of my birthday party is to be “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and so as a gift, last night my mother took me to see the Opera. It was a very interesting adaption, quite traditional in most ways but with a little twist here and there, I though the choice of a counter tenor as Oberon particularly appealing. They also had children performing the parts of the faerie court and they were just perfect! The way they moved, and their light lilting voices really gave the parts an innocent charm, I think children know best how fairies should dance.
The greatest vocal talents I think were the roles of Titania and Helena, in particular the latter seemed to soar off her high notes where others simply sung. Puck was a little dissapointing in both his manner and voice, but this did not spoil the performance. The costumes were delightful! They had chosen colours for each set, blue and purple for the Faerie court, Red and gold for the lovers and Browns for the actors. I have been given some fresh ideas for the Prince and my costumes too.
It was a truly enjoyable evening, we had japanese for dinner before we left and I wore my Victorian Maiden black velvet jsk with my hair up in semi-regency style with pearls in it. I haven’t been to the Opera in some time and I think now I must make an effort to go more often.

It sounds like you had a wonderful evening. I have never been to the opera, but your post really makes me want to go to one. I am still trying to be able to go to ballets.

I’ve never been to the Opera and I love it since I was a child. I used to watch Opera on the TV, which makes me a little sad now that I think about it.. ^^;
I’m glad you enjoyed it!!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is so raunchy! XD I never understood it until I joined theatre as my major and my class had us go through it. Oberon wants Titania’s little human boy as a bedmate, Titania tells him no, so he makes her commit bestiality so she may feel how it is to desire something one should not have and thus give up the boy more easily. Then when they argue about how Oberon was always playing around with Hippolyta– his “bouncing” Amazoness–and then Oberon throws back at her that she had a man commit adultery and sleep around as well. I find it very amusing they used children as the fairy court when, as I was awakened to what was going on, these fairies are rather perverse!

Dear Princess, I’ve been following your site for some time and I admire your lifestyle very much. Would you mind directing me to some webpage with more details about this production of the opera? I’m interested in opera, mainly Baroque, and especially in the countertenor voice. Thank you very much!
